Deputy Prime Minister Says Ethiopia Is Elevating Early Childhood Development as Core Pillar of National Transformation

Addis Ababa, May 11, 2026 (FMC) – The Deputy Prime Minister has said Ethiopia is placing early childhood development at the heart of its national development agenda, emphasizing that the future of the country begins with its children.

In a social media message shared after addressing International Early Childhood Development Conference in Addis Ababa today, he stated that the government is pursuing a comprehensive and multi-sectoral approach that integrates education, health, nutrition, and childcare services to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.

He noted that efforts are being strengthened through the expansion of free and compulsory pre-primary education, alongside improved maternal and child health services, nutrition programs, and childcare support systems. According to his message, more than 35,000 pre-primary schools are now operational across the country, with workplace childcare services also expanding to improve early learning conditions and school readiness.

The Deputy Prime Minister further emphasized that the focus of ongoing reforms is not only on increasing access to early education but also on ensuring preparedness, enabling children to enter school with the foundational skills needed for long-term success.

Highlighting national progress, he pointed to flagship initiatives such as the Seqota Declaration, which he said has contributed to measurable improvements in child well-being, including significant reductions in stunting. He added that regional leadership, strong partnerships, and sustained investment continue to drive these gains.

He also noted that Addis Ababa is currently advancing innovative models in early childhood development and hosting an important conference on the subject, underscoring Ethiopia’s commitment to knowledge sharing and scaling successful approaches.

Reaffirming the government’s position, he said Ethiopia remains committed to building a healthier and more resilient generation, not only within the country but across the continent.
