Egypt Announces Further Gold-Mining Operations in Sudan Days After Airstrikes Killed 72 Civilians

Addis Ababa, October 13, 2026 (FMC) — Egypt has announced further military operations targeting gold-mining activities days after its deadly airstrikes on mining sites in neighboring Sudan reportedly killed 72 civilians.

The Egyptian military said on Monday that it was continuing its campaign against gold mining in the Eastern Desert.

The announcement came days after the reported weekend airstrikes on artisanal gold-mining sites in the Jabal al-Uqaydat area of North Wadi, in Sudan’s River Nile State, where Sudanese rights groups say at least 72 miners were killed.

Sudanese rights groups accused Egyptian aircraft of carrying out the strikes, which they said hit sites inside Sudanese territory near the disputed border.

Announcing the continuation of its campaign, the Egyptian military spokesperson said the operation followed the distribution of warning leaflets and was intended to “impose full sovereignty within the borders of the Egyptian state and protect its resources and national wealth.”

Egypt’s announcement of further action against gold-mining sites comes in the wake of the reported mass killing of civilians in neighboring Sudan.
