Ethiopia Committed to Building Addis Ababa into African Healthcare Hub, Deputy Prime Minister Says
Addis Ababa, August 21, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia is committed to positioning Addis Ababa as a leading African healthcare hub, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh said.
Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen made the remark after opening the 13th East Africa Healthcare Federation Conference and Exhibition at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum in Addis Ababa.
Held under the theme “Resilience: Building the East African Health Economy,” the conference brings together governments, health leaders, investors and partners around the shared priority of building resilient, equitable and productive health systems capable of serving people and strengthening Africa’s health security.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, Ethiopia will work to position Addis Ababa as a leading African destination for specialized healthcare and medical tourism, while expanding local manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and diagnostics.
He also underscored the importance of deepening public-private partnerships and regional cooperation to advance the health sector.
Ethiopia is ready to support the establishment of the continental headquarters of the Africa Healthcare Federation in Addis Ababa, the Deputy Prime Minister said, noting that this would strengthen the capital’s role as a platform for African health investment, policy dialogue and cooperation.
Drawing on the lesson of Adwa, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen said Africans can change their circumstances when they organize around a common purpose and build the capacity to act.
He said progress should ultimately be measured by the investments mobilized, enterprises built, medicines and equipment produced, partnerships sustained, and lives improved and saved.
