Ethiopia Launches National E-Mobility Strategy to Advance Green Transport Transition

Addis Ababa, May 25, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia has officially launched its National E-Mobility Strategy and Implementation Framework, a policy initiative aimed at accelerating the country’s transition toward sustainable, climate-resilient and low-emission transport systems.

The strategy, unveiled at a launch event attended by senior government officials, development partners and sector stakeholders, is designed to promote electric mobility across Ethiopia’s transport sector while supporting broader green economic development goals.

Speaking at the event, Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to building a modern, environmentally friendly and resilient transport system through the expansion of electric mobility.

He noted that the transition to electric transport requires coordinated efforts across the entire transport value chain, including logistics systems, charging infrastructure, energy readiness, safety standards and multi-stakeholder cooperation.

Minister of Industry, Melaku Alebel, said the strategy is also expected to play a significant role in Ethiopia’s industrial transformation by creating opportunities for local manufacturing, vehicle assembly, investment attraction, technology transfer and job creation.

The strategy prioritizes the expansion of EV charging infrastructure, promotion of electric public transport, strengthening of regulatory frameworks, integration of renewable energy sources and the development of environmentally friendly urban mobility systems.

Officials said the initiative is expected to contribute to Ethiopia’s green growth agenda while positioning the country as a regional leader in electric mobility development.

The launch event was held at the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) headquarters in Africa.
