Ethiopia Sees Promising Gains in Irrigated Maize Farming, PM Says

Addis Ababa, April 19, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Ethiopia is registering encouraging progress in irrigated maize farming, describing the early results as a strong indication that the country’s broader food self-sufficiency ambitions are within reach.

In a social media post, the Prime Minister noted that irrigated maize production remains one of the key focus areas for the country, with current outcomes showing notable success.

According to him, these early gains signal a positive trajectory toward Ethiopia’s long-term objective of becoming self-reliant in food production and ending dependence on food aid.
