Ethiopia to Observe 19th National Flag Day Today under Theme of National Consensus and Unity

Addis Ababa, October 12, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia is set to observe its 19th National Flag Day today under the theme “Our Flag for National Consensus and Unity,” with the national commemoration bringing together Ethiopians across the country and abroad in honour of the flag and the generations who sacrificed to defend the nation’s sovereignty and dignity.

President Taye Atske-Selassie is expected to attend the central ceremony, which will feature a flag-raising ritual accompanied by the marching band and honour guard of the Ethiopian National Defence Force.

The observance will take place simultaneously across Ethiopia’s regional states and city administrations, government institutions and schools, as well as at Ethiopian embassies and consulates around the world. The nationwide and international commemorations are being coordinated by the House of Peoples’ Representatives.

National Flag Day pays tribute to the Ethiopians who shed their blood and gave their lives to safeguard the country’s territorial integrity and national honour. The flag represents a shared national legacy of sovereignty and the collective responsibility to preserve it for future generations.

This year’s theme places national consensus and unity at the centre of the observance, underscoring their significance in strengthening a common national purpose and advancing Ethiopia’s shared aspirations.
