Ethiopian Gov’t Reports Strong Progress in Climate-Resilient Development Across Key Sectors

Addis Ababa, April 22, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia is advancing its climate-resilient development path with tangible results, according to a latest update shared following the 100-day and nine-month national performance review conducted by the Council of Ministers convened by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The update indicates that the country’s climate-compatible development efforts are being implemented through an integrated approach that aligns mitigation and adaptation measures.

In efforts to mitigate climate impact, Ethiopia has increased its green cover through carbon emission control, deforestation prevention, and the planting of 48 billion seedlings under the Green Legacy Initiative. Measures including modernized water management and climate-smart agriculture are also reported to be contributing to improvements in food security.

In the urban development sector, riverfront development projects, expansion of green and modern infrastructure, and the promotion of non-motorized transport are cited as contributing to aligning urban growth with environmental sustainability.

At the national level, the use of surface and groundwater for irrigation, the adoption of resilient crop varieties, and efforts to strengthen livestock resources are supporting improved nutritional outcomes.

In the energy sector, the expansion of green power sources is highlighted as supporting development, providing a foundation for industrial growth and electric transport.

The update further notes that these efforts are being implemented through frameworks including the Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy, Ten-Year Development Plan, Nationally Determined Contributions, and National Adaptation Plan, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The government stated that the ongoing efforts are aimed at laying the foundation for a sustainable and environmentally resilient future.
