Ethiopian Values and Military Excellence Key in Peacekeeping Missions: ENDF

Addis Ababa, May 25, 2026 (FMC) — Deputy Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF), General Abebaw Tadesse, has underscored that international peacekeeping missions should be conducted in a manner rooted in Ethiopian values, discipline, and military professionalism.

He made the remarks today during the graduation ceremony of the 20th batch of peacekeepers trained at the Hurso Contingent Training School under the Ethiopian Peace Support Training Center (PSTC), the ENDF’s principal institution for the training and research of military, police, and civilian personnel engaged in peace support operations.

General Abebaw noted that graduating peacekeepers are expected to effectively execute their assigned duties while prioritizing the protection of communities affected by conflict, guided by the ethical standards and values of the Ethiopian defense forces.

He further highlighted Ethiopia’s longstanding and widely recognized contribution to global peacekeeping efforts, stating that the country’s name has been consistently associated with international peace support operations. He added that the recognition Ethiopia received during the 80th anniversary of the United Nations serves as further acknowledgment of this contribution.

The Deputy Chief of Staff also pointed out that peacekeeping missions are becoming increasingly complex and expanding in scope across global, continental, and regional levels. He stressed that this evolving environment is closely linked to Ethiopia’s national security interests, requiring enhanced readiness, competence, and professionalism from deployed personnel, according to Lefana Digital, the ENDF’s online media outlet.

On the occasion, Head of Communication and Media at the Hurso Contingent Training School, Major Aklile Legesse, stated that the graduating peacekeepers have completed pre-deployment training for assignments under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

He further noted that the ENDF continues to strengthen its dual role of safeguarding Ethiopia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while actively contributing to international peacekeeping missions under the United Nations and African Union frameworks.
