PM Abiy Hails Early Completion of Five Million Coders Target, Sets New Goal of Seven Million

Addis Ababa, June 11, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced that Ethiopia has surpassed five million enrollments under the 5 Million Ethiopian Coders Initiative, reaching the milestone in less than two years since the program’s launch.

In a social media post shared this morning, the Prime Minister said the initiative, launched on July 23, 2024, has registered 5,005,146 enrollments in Programming, Data Analysis, Android Development and Artificial Intelligence fundamentals.

“What we set out to achieve in three years, we have accomplished in less than two,” Abiy said, describing the achievement as “a testament to our people’s determination and limitless potential.”

The Prime Minister noted that the milestone marks the beginning of a broader national ambition, stating that Ethiopia is now setting its sights on reaching seven million enrollments by August 2026.

Calling on Ethiopians to join the national digital skills campaign, Abiy urged citizens, particularly students, to take advantage of the summer break by enrolling in the free training program and earning internationally recognized certifications.

“Do not let it pass idly. Register, learn, and return to your classrooms not just as students, but as certified digital leaders,” he said.

The Prime Minister stressed that expanding digital skills among young Ethiopians remains central to the country’s efforts to build a digitally empowered workforce capable of driving innovation and supporting Ethiopia’s ongoing digital transformation.

The 5 Million Ethiopian Coders Initiative is part of Ethiopia’s broader digital transformation agenda aimed at equipping millions of citizens with globally competitive digital skills through free online training in key technology fields.
