PM Abiy stresses persistent leadership and hands-on oversight as keys to Ethiopia’s prosperity

Addis Ababa, June 5, 2025 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed recently emphasized the importance of continuous, dedicated leadership and close monitoring in ensuring the successful completion of national projects and Ethiopia’s sustained prosperity.

Reflecting on Ethiopia’s development journey, the Prime Minister recalled early public skepticism toward government housing assignments, noting protests against assigned neighbors. Yet, he highlighted how persistent institutional commitment transformed Singapore from a fledgling state to a prosperous nation with adequate housing for its citizens.

Drawing lessons from global examples, PM Abiy cited the Apollo space program led by President John F. Kennedy amid America’s turbulent 1960s. Despite social unrest and opposition, Kennedy’s unwavering focus and supervision propelled the U.S. to historic space achievements.

Similarly, he referenced India’s post-independence vision under Prime Minister Nehru, who prioritized industrialization, power, education, and IT investments amid pressing food security challenges. These examples, Abiy noted, show that visionary ideas coupled with diligent oversight are essential for lasting change.

In a recent interview with local media ETV, the Prime Minister shared his personal experience managing Unity Park’s construction, stressing the importance of hands-on leadership and teamwork

Premier Abiy stressed that this approach must apply at all governance levels—from local kebeles to city administrations—where active leadership and field presence accelerate progress and accountability. He emphasized kebele chairmen’s need to engage closely with communities to track families, livestock, and households, preventing neglect and false reporting.

He cited examples of abandoned projects and poor monitoring in some areas, warning that without diligent oversight, progress suffers. “Leaders must not fear fatigue but embrace the hard work of oversight,” the Prime Minister said. “There is no project I have started and not followed through to completion. This dedication lays the foundation for Ethiopia’s future prosperity.”

Highlighting Ethiopia’s COVID-19 response in Addis Ababa, Abiy noted daily meetings with coordinators during early phases. As capacity grew, monitoring intensity decreased, illustrating the value of empowered teams.

He reaffirmed his commitment to major national projects like the Renaissance Dam, where daily supervision guided critical milestones. Reduced direct involvement over time reflected successful leadership development.

Concluding with optimism, Prime Minister Abiy praised Ethiopia’s abundant energy and capable workforce, reaffirming that steadfast leadership and monitoring will secure the country’s path to sustained growth and development.
