Addis Ababa, September 22, 2026 (FMC) — Chinese President Xi Jinping’s forthcoming state visit to the United States is placing the trajectory of China-US relations under an intense global spotlight, with Beijing and Washington seeking to translate high-level engagement into greater strategic stability between the world’s two major powers.

Xi is scheduled to visit the United States from September 23 to 25 at the invitation of US President Donald Trump, according to China’s Foreign Ministry. During the visit, the two leaders are expected to exchange views on major issues concerning bilateral relations as well as world peace and development.

A report published by People’s Daily Online and identified as Xinhua frames the visit against the wider trajectory of a relationship that has experienced trade disputes, technology restrictions and other tensions, while emphasizing the growing consequences of how Beijing and Washington manage their ties for both countries and the wider world.

The report points to a new vision agreed by Xi and Trump during their May meeting in Beijing: building a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability over the next three years and beyond. It quotes Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as describing head-of-state diplomacy as “the anchor of China-US relations” in a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ahead of the upcoming summit.

China’s Foreign Ministry has separately said the two presidents’ exchange of visits within six months would be of “historic significance,” adding that Beijing is prepared to work with Washington to strengthen dialogue and cooperation, properly manage differences and deepen what it calls a constructive relationship of strategic stability.

Economic and trade relations constitute another central strand of the engagement. The Xinhua report describes them as a potential “ballast” for broader China-US relations, noting that the two countries have continued negotiations following tariff disputes and that their economic and trade teams concluded their latest consultations in New York with what the report described as candid, in-depth and constructive exchanges.

The report also highlights areas in which the two countries have overlapping interests, including artificial intelligence, climate change mitigation, public health and counter-narcotics. US scholar Robert Lawrence Kuhn is quoted as saying both sides have a major stake in constructive strategic stability, while emphasizing the importance of preventing disputes over tariffs, critical minerals and other issues from escalating.

Beyond government-to-government diplomacy, the report places considerable emphasis on people-to-people relations as another dimension of the bilateral relationship. It notes Xi’s initiative to bring 50,000 young Americans to China for exchange and study programs over five years, a target that China says was reached two and a half years ahead of schedule.

Against this backdrop, Xi’s Washington visit is being watched not only for the immediate outcomes of the leaders’ discussions but also for what the engagement may signal about the direction of relations between Beijing and Washington and their broader implications for international stability and cooperation.
