Vietnam surpasses 8.8 million international visitors in four months as tourism growth accelerates

Addis Ababa, May 4, 2026 (FMC) – Vietnam has recorded a strong surge in international tourism, welcoming 2.03 million foreign visitors in April and bringing the total for the first four months of 2026 to 8.8 million – a 14.6 per cent year-on-year increase and around 35 per cent of its annual target of 25 million arrivals.

According to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, the figures reflect the country’s growing reputation as a stable and increasingly attractive destination. The latest data marks the first time Vietnam has exceeded 2 million international arrivals for four consecutive months, as well as a record January–April performance, as reported by our international media partner, citing its Vietnamese media VNA.

Asia continues to dominate inbound tourism flows. The largest source markets include China and South Korea, which together account for nearly 40 per cent of total arrivals. Other key contributors include Russia, India, and the Philippines.

At the same time, Vietnam is seeing a notable shift towards market diversification. Russia emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments, with arrivals increasing by nearly 300 per cent year-on-year, supported by the resumption of direct flights and strong demand for long-haul leisure travel. Southeast Asian markets also showed robust expansion, particularly Indonesia and Malaysia, while India continues to gain importance as a high-growth market.

Emerging travel trends – including experiential tourism, ecotourism, wellness travel and authentic local experiences – are further enhancing the country’s competitiveness. With expanded air connectivity, more open visa policies and ongoing improvements in tourism infrastructure, Vietnam is consolidating its status as one of Asia’s fastest-growing travel destinations.
