PM Abiy underscores government support to build a stronger media sector

Addis Ababa, June 25, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bolstering the Ethiopian media sector by providing critical support aimed at enhancing its capacity and sustainability. This pledge was made during a recent engagement with media professionals from both public and private outlets across the country.

Addressing key challenges faced by the sector, the Prime Minister highlighted ongoing government initiatives to resolve longstanding issues such as paper supply shortages affecting print media. Efforts are underway to establish domestic paper industries, supported by both governmental bodies and private investors, to ensure reliable access to essential materials.

The Prime Minister emphasized that sustainable financial capacity remains a priority for media institutions. Accordingly, the government is working to provide training, technical assistance, and financial resources that enable media outlets to operate independently while maintaining quality content aligned with national interests.

In addition to strengthening infrastructure, the government is facilitating better coordination among scattered media associations to create unified platforms for policy dialogue and advocacy. Recognizing the vital role of timely and accurate information, the government has set directives to ensure consistent access to official data and encourages cooperation with journalists accredited by recognized institutions.

Prime Minister Abiy also underscored the importance of creating an enabling environment where media can thrive without undue pressure, highlighting the government’s readiness to support media professionals who adhere to ethical standards and work for the benefit of the nation.

This commitment comes as part of the broader national vision to build resilient institutions that foster democratic participation and informed citizenry, positioning the media as a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s socio-economic development.
