Ethiopia’s Achievements Raising the Height of the National Flag, Says GCS
Addis Ababa, October 13, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s recent achievements are “raising the height of the national flag,” the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia’s Government Communication Service (GCS) said in a statement today on the occasion of the 18th National Flag Day.
The statement highlights that the country has turned historic challenges into milestones of development and national pride. The Abbay River, long a source of regret and sorrow for Ethiopians who could not benefit from its waters, has now become a foundation for progress. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has transformed the river into a source of electricity and light for tens of millions of citizens, while generating opportunities in fisheries, food sovereignty, tourism, and urban development.
“The GERD has turned the river’s past underutilization into a symbol of victory and national triumph,” the GCS said, noting that Ethiopia is further diversifying energy sources—including hydro, steam, solar, wind, and nuclear power—strengthening both the nation’s development and the symbolic stature of the flag.
Beyond energy, Ethiopia has expanded its use of underground resources through large-scale natural gas and oil projects. Efforts to produce domestic fertilizer are reaching a critical stage, supporting agricultural productivity and reinforcing food sovereignty.
The government has also undertaken wide-ranging efforts to modernize urban and rural life. Smart city initiatives, environmental protection projects along riversides such as in Entoto and the Awash River Basin, and rural development programs have enhanced Ethiopia’s international image while elevating the dignity of the national flag.
The GCS emphasized that Flag Day is not only a celebration of independence but a symbol of freedom secured through sacrifice. “Our ancestors gave their blood and lives to protect Ethiopia’s freedom, passing on a flag that serves as a beacon of liberty not only for Ethiopians but for the world,” the statement said.
Today, the legacy continues with heroes defending Ethiopia’s sovereignty on land, in the air, at sea, and in cyberspace. Citizens are called to honor these sacrifices by upholding the flag with dignity and working to achieve Ethiopia’s prosperity.
