Ethiopia–Russia relations gain momentum across trade, technology, and African cooperation

Addis Ababa, October 21, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia and the Russian Federation are deepening their multifaceted partnership, with growing cooperation in trade, technology, industrial sectors, and multilateral diplomacy, Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia Evgeny Terekhin said.

The ambassador highlighted that high-level dialogue between the leaders of the two countries, including meetings on the sidelines of Russia-Africa summits and BRICS, continues to drive strategic cooperation and enable prompt resolution of bilateral issues. “The personal, trust-based dialogue between our leaders is the locomotive of the entire complex of Russian-Ethiopian relations,” he said.

As part of this ongoing dialogue, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotewos visited Moscow on October 20–21, holding talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and meeting officials from key economic ministries and agencies. Ambassador Terekhin described the visit as a continuation of the September 25 talks between the two countries’ leaders, further synchronizing efforts on bilateral and multilateral matters.

Trade and economic ties are expanding rapidly. Bilateral trade more than doubled in the first half of 2025, reaching $191.2 million, reflecting strong mutual business interest. Ethiopia’s exports, including coffee, flowers, oilseeds, and legumes, have significant potential for growth in the Russian market. Efforts are underway to simplify logistics and create independent financial settlement mechanisms to facilitate direct producer-to-importer contacts. Industrial cooperation, particularly in the automotive sector, and energy collaboration—including nuclear energy and modernization of Soviet-era energy facilities—remain key priorities.

Ethiopia’s strategic position in Africa is another focus of the partnership. Ambassador Terekhin noted that Addis Ababa, home to the African Union headquarters, could host the 2026 Russia-Africa Summit. Preparations for the third summit are already underway, and Ethiopia’s historical role in Pan-Africanism and active global engagement strengthen Russian-African cooperation.

People-to-people ties are also being enhanced, with simplified travel procedures such as Ethiopian visas on arrival for Russian citizens facilitating business, humanitarian, and tourism exchanges.

The ambassador told Russian news agency TASS that ongoing coordination between Ethiopia and Russia across bilateral and multilateral platforms, including the UN and BRICS, is expected to open new avenues for mutually beneficial cooperation aligned with the interests of both nations.
