Health reforms in Amhara region reflect purpose, systems, and life-saving focus – Deputy PM
Addis Ababa, March 24, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s Amhara Regional Health Bureau is undergoing significant reforms aimed at improving maternal and child health, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh said in a social media post today.
Following the visit to the Bureau on Monday, Mr. Temesgen highlighted efforts to modernize infrastructure, reimagine workspaces, and strengthen healthcare systems to deliver timely, quality care. He emphasized that the initiatives are aligned with the national vision of “Smart Cities, Smart Health Services” while maintaining a primary focus on saving lives.
Key aspects of the reforms include the push toward digitalization, which aims to create a paperless, data-driven system. This approach is intended to improve tracking of pregnancies, ensure safer deliveries, enhance referral networks, and facilitate faster responses to complications, ensuring that no mother or child is overlooked.
Mr. Temesgen stressed that ending preventable maternal and child deaths requires focus, urgency, and accountability. He outlined critical measures, including providing skilled care at every birth, strengthening primary healthcare and referral networks, using data to guide action, and reaching vulnerable communities.
“The Amhara Regional Health Bureau is moving in the right direction—combining reform with results, and vision with execution,” Mr. Temesgen noted. “Health is wealth. There is no greater measure of a health system than whether mothers survive childbirth and children live to see their fifth birthday.”
He concluded that the government will continue to support and accelerate these efforts, underscoring that saving lives is a responsibility, not merely an aspiration.
