7th General Elections to Mark Democratic Milestone for Ethiopia, Says Political Parties Joint Council
Addis Ababa, May 27, 2026 (FMC) — The 7th General Elections will mark a significant democratic milestone for Ethiopia, reflecting the will of the people through the ballot, according to Solomon Ayele, Chairperson of the Ethiopian Political Parties Joint Council.
Solomon noted that, as per the schedule of the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), voters are set to cast their ballots on June 1, 2026.
He said the Council is working to ensure the successful conduct of the elections, drawing on the experience and lessons of the 6th national elections. He added that key preparatory activities for the 7th General Elections, including digital candidate registration, have been successfully completed.
According to him, political parties have also been able to present their policy options through free airtime allocated within the electoral framework.
Solomon further stated that debate forums organized by various stakeholders have provided favorable conditions for parties to share their ideas with the public in a relatively open environment.
He also highlighted that the establishment of an Election Follow-up Committee has created an important opportunity to assess and strengthen enabling conditions for the electoral process in coordination with the Election Board.
In addition, he noted that the election monitoring desk is closely following overall developments to help ensure a conducive environment for the successful conduct of the polls.
Referring to the extension of the election period from May 20, Solomon urged political parties to strictly adhere to electoral laws and act as responsible stakeholders in setting a democratic example.
He concluded by describing the 7th General Elections as a “victory for Ethiopia,” and called on voters to actively participate and demonstrate their commitment to strengthening the country’s democratic system.
