Addis Ababa Police Announces Road Closures Ahead of Meskel-Demera Celebration

Addis Ababa, September 25, 2026 (FMC) — Addis Ababa Police Commission has announced list of highways and roads leading toward Meskel Square will be closed to all types of vehicles from 11 a.m. on September 26 until the conclusion of the Meskel-Demera celebration.

According to the Police Commission, the restrictions will affect the route from 22 Mazoria toward Meskel Square at St. Urael Church Square, both the upper and lower sides; the route from Bole Airport toward Meskel Square at Dembel and Olympia, both the upper and lower sides; and the route from Gofa through Tabot Maderiya toward Legehar at the St. Qirqos Church intersection.

They will also cover the route from Mexico Square toward Meskel Square at the Legehar traffic light; from Legehar Tele toward Addis Ababa Stadium at the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia’s domed building intersection; and from Churchill Avenue, through Ambassador Park, toward Meskel Square at the Harembee Hotel traffic light.

The route from Arat Kilo through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs toward Meskel Square at the National Palace intersection, as well as the route from Kazanchis traffic light toward Meskel Square at Mekrez Hospital, will likewise be closed to vehicles.

The Police Commission has advised motorists to use alternative routes during the restriction period. It also said that stopping or parking vehicles, whether briefly or for an extended period, will be prohibited along the specified roads starting from 6 a.m. on September 26.

The measures are intended to facilitate the Meskel-Demera celebration and ensure orderly movement around the celebration area.

Residents, members of the international community and visitors arriving in Addis Ababa for Meskel and other festivities are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and allow additional travel time.
