Addis Ababa, November 5, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopian Intelligence Chief Redwan Hussien has called on media institutions and journalists to balance freedom of expression with professional responsibility amid rapid technological advancements.
Speaking at the inauguration of Ethiopia’s first Media Center of Excellence, Redwan said technological progress had expanded opportunities for democratic development while also creating challenges that require responsible oversight.
He stressed that freedom of expression, a fundamental pillar of a democratic system, must go hand in hand with accountability.
“In a democratic society, freedom and accountability are inseparable and mutually reinforcing; one cannot exist without the other,” he said.
Highlighting the media’s far-reaching influence on society, Redwan urged journalists and media organizations to uphold professional standards, verify information, distinguish facts from opinions and speculation, and fairly present diverse perspectives.
He said media professionals have both a moral and professional responsibility to contribute to informed public discourse and a healthy society.
Redwan also cautioned against sensationalism and deliberate misinformation, noting that reporting errors can occur but must be addressed through timely, transparent and sincere corrections, ENA reported.
He further emphasized that freedom of expression carries legal and moral responsibilities, warning that disinformation, incitement to violence, defamation and hate speech entail accountability.
