Addis Ababa, August 25, 2026 (FMC) — The 1,501st Mawlid, commemorating the birth of Prophet Muhammad, is being celebrated at the Grand Anwar Mosque in Addis Ababa under the theme “The Jurisprudence of the Prophet,” with a strong emphasis on peace, unity and support for vulnerable members of society.
Speaking on the occasion, First Deputy President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council Sheikh Abdulkerim Bedredin said this year’s celebration carries particular significance as it comes following the conclusion of Ethiopia’s National Dialogue process, which culminated in the submission of shared recommendations.
Recalling the Prophet Muhammad’s recognition of the greatness of Habesha, Sheikh Abdulkerim called on Ethiopian Muslims to contribute to the peace and unity of the country.
He also stressed that commemorating the Prophet’s birth should go beyond the occasion itself, urging Muslims to uphold his teachings and Sunnah throughout the year and extend support to people in need.
As part of the celebration, a feeding program has been organized by the youth association of the Grand Anwar Mosque, with more than 6,000 people in need expected to benefit at different locations.
Officials of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council and the Addis Ababa Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, the Grand Anwar Mosque’s Chief Imam Sheikh Taha Mohammed, diplomats and large numbers of worshippers attended the celebration.
