BRICS Reaffirms Support for Ethiopia’s WTO Bid, ICAO Candidacy and COP32 Presidency

Addis Ababa, September 14, 2026 (FMC) — BRICS member states have reaffirmed their support for Ethiopia’s bid to join the World Trade Organization (WTO), its candidacy for the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council, and its presidency of the UN climate change conference COP32.

The positions are reflected in the New Delhi Declaration adopted at the 18th BRICS Summit held in New Delhi, India, from September 12 to 13, according to a social media post by the Office of the Prime Minister.

The declaration states that BRICS strongly supports Ethiopia and Iran in their bids for accession to the WTO, within efforts to strengthen the participation of developing countries in the multilateral trading system.

It also welcomes Ethiopia’s candidacy for the ICAO Council, noting that the country has been endorsed by the African Union as the sole African candidate for the additional Council seat allocated to underrepresented regions.

In the area of climate diplomacy, the declaration expresses support for Ethiopia’s presidency of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP32, following its commendation of the successful conclusion of Brazil’s COP30 presidency.

The three positions provide concrete expressions of BRICS support for Ethiopia’s engagement in key multilateral institutions and processes, spanning global trade, international civil aviation and international climate diplomacy.

The New Delhi Declaration was adopted under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
