Ethiopia Lays Veteran Diplomat Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis to Rest

Addis Ababa, April 18, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia laid to rest veteran diplomat Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis today at Entoto Kidane Mihret Church in Addis Ababa, in a ceremony attended by senior state officials, diplomats, and family members.

President Taye Atske-Selassie, former President Sahle-Work Zewde, senior government officials, and members of the diplomatic corps based in Addis Ababa attended the funeral ceremony to pay their final respects.

Ambassador Konjit is widely remembered as a pioneering figure in Ethiopia’s diplomatic service, having begun her career at a young age in the 1950s at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Over several decades, she rose through the ranks from desk officer to senior leadership positions, serving the country in a distinguished diplomatic career.

She is recognized as Ethiopia’s second female ambassador, following Yodit Imru, and served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Ethiopian missions in Ottawa, Cairo, Tel Aviv, and Vienna.

Beyond bilateral diplomacy, Ambassador Konjit also represented Ethiopia in key multilateral institutions, including serving as Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

Between June 2017 and September 2018, she served as Special Advisor in the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)-led South Sudan peace process, contributing her extensive experience to regional peace efforts.

Born in Harar in 1932 E.C., Ambassador Konjit passed away on April 7, 2026, while receiving medical treatment.
