Ethiopia Offers to Host New Development Bank Office in Addis Ababa at BRICS Plus Session

Addis Ababa, September 13, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia has offered to host a New Development Bank (NDB) office in Addis Ababa, as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed called for stronger African representation and wider access to finance and markets during the BRICS Plus Session.

The session brought together BRICS member states and partner countries, providing a platform for discussions on Africa’s role in emerging global economic arrangements and opportunities for stronger cooperation across developing economies.

Prime Minister Abiy called for stronger African representation, greater access to finance and markets, and practical measures to advance trade, investment and connectivity.

In that context, he said Ethiopia stands ready to host an NDB office in Addis Ababa, an offer that would extend the development bank’s reach across Africa.

The proposed presence in Addis Ababa would further connect the continent with a multilateral development institution established to support infrastructure and sustainable development in emerging markets and developing countries.

Prime Minister Abiy also underscored the importance of strong BRICS backing for COP32, to be hosted in Addis Ababa, saying the summit can serve as an inclusive platform for advancing climate action and sustainable development.

He invited BRICS member states and partner countries to Addis Ababa for COP32, scheduled to take place in Ethiopia in 2027.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed participated in the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India, held on September 12–13, 2026, under the theme “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
