Ethiopia’s Deputy PM Says Kwame Nkrumah’s Vision for African Unity Continues to Inspire the Continent

Addis Ababa, July 24, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh has paid tribute to Ghana’s founding President and Pan-African icon Kwame Nkrumah, saying his vision for African unity, self-determination and the liberation of the continent continues to inspire generations across Africa and the African diaspora.

The Deputy Prime Minister made the remarks after visiting the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra, where he laid a wreath in honor of the late Ghanaian leader following his participation in the African Union Extraordinary Summit on Health.

In a social media post, Temesgen described the memorial as a sacred site housing the mausoleum and museum of Kwame Nkrumah and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah, saying it stands as a lasting tribute to Ghana’s founding father.

He commended the Ghanaian people for preserving the legacy of Nkrumah, noting that the memorial reflects the importance of honoring leaders whose vision and sacrifice shaped their nations while inspiring future generations to build on that legacy.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, Nkrumah’s vision extended well beyond Ghana’s independence, as he championed Africa’s complete liberation from colonialism and devoted his life to advancing the cause of continental unity.

Temesgen also highlighted Nkrumah’s close friendship with Ethiopia and his pivotal role in the establishment of the Organization of African Unity, now the African Union, describing both as enduring symbols of his commitment to a united, prosperous and self-determined Africa.

The visit formed part of Temesgen’s working trip to Ghana, where he represented Ethiopia at the African Union Extraordinary Summit on Health. During the visit, he also held bilateral talks with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, with the two sides reaffirming the longstanding friendship between Ethiopia and Ghana and their shared commitment to Pan-Africanism and Africa’s development.

The Deputy Prime Minister concluded his tribute by reaffirming the enduring spirit of Pan-Africanism as a guiding force for Africa’s unity and common future.
