PM Abiy Says 7th General Election Sent Strong Message for Peace, Inclusion, and Democratic Competition

Addis Ababa, July 7, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said Ethiopia’s 2018 E.C. (2025/26) General Election sent a strong message for peace, inclusion, and democratic competition, describing the electoral process as a demonstration of citizens’ commitment to the country’s future.

Addressing the House of Peoples’ Representatives during its 30th regular sitting of the fifth year of its tenure, Prime Minister Abiy said the election was distinct from previous polls as it faced attempts to disrupt the process rather than being limited to competition among political parties.

The Prime Minister said Ethiopians successfully conducted the election despite challenges, with citizens rejecting extremism, ethnic hatred, intimidation, and divisive narratives through their participation.

He noted that the election demonstrated the social capital and resilience of the Ethiopian people, who engaged in political competition through ideas, debates, and peaceful participation.

Prime Minister Abiy also highlighted the ruling Prosperity Party’s decision to contest 85 percent of parliamentary seats while leaving the remaining 15 percent to opposition parties and independent candidates, saying the move contributed to broader participation and inclusion of diverse political voices.

He said the government views the mandate received from citizens as a responsibility to improve public welfare, advance national interests, and serve the people with commitment and accountability.

The Prime Minister further noted that limiting the tenure of an incumbent government to no more than two terms is among the ruling party’s proposed agendas for the upcoming National Dialogue Conference, describing it as an important foundation for Ethiopia’s political future.
