Upper House Speaker Applauds Growing Ethiopia-Azerbaijan Relations, Calls for Broader Cooperation

Addis Ababa, July 29, 2026 (FMC) — Speaker of Ethiopia’s House of Federation, Agegnehu Teshager, has applauded the growing relations between Ethiopia and Azerbaijan, calling for broader cooperation across political, economic, technological, and other areas of mutual interest.

Speaker Agegnehu made the remarks during discussions with Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, Sahiba Gafarova, and her delegation.

The Upper House Speaker recalled that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s recent official visit to Baku opened a new chapter in Ethiopia-Azerbaijan relations, laying a strong foundation for expanding cooperation in politics, trade, investment, energy, tourism, technology, and other sectors.

He said the visit by Speaker Gafarova and her delegation reflects the shared commitment of the two friendly countries to translate their growing relations into tangible outcomes.

Speaker Agegnehu also highlighted the importance of strengthening the exchange of knowledge and experience between the two countries, recalling that the third Ethiopia-Azerbaijan Political Consultation Forum held in Addis Ababa in 2017 Ethiopian Calendar elevated political ties between the two sides.

He appreciated Azerbaijan’s support in improving Ethiopia’s Mesob one-stop service center, noting that the cooperation has contributed to efforts to modernize public service delivery.

The Speaker further emphasized Ethiopia’s National Dialogue process aimed at strengthening peace and national consensus, as well as the contribution of the Green Legacy Initiative and corridor development projects toward environmental protection, sustainable development, and urban modernization.

Regarding parliamentary diplomacy, Speaker Agegnehu stressed the need to enhance cooperation between parliamentary friendship groups in areas including lawmaking, institutional capacity building, digital parliamentary systems, and public participation.

He added that stronger connections among youth and women parliamentarians would further contribute to advancing people-to-people relations between Ethiopia and Azerbaijan.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to further expanding bilateral cooperation in politics, parliamentary affairs, economy, trade, investment, tourism, energy, climate change, and other areas of shared interest.
