Former Dimtsi Woyane Tigray Broadcaster Rebranded as Maedot Broadcasting Service Under New Licence
Addis Ababa, October 29, 2026 (FMC) — The Ethiopian Media Authority has granted a new broadcasting licence to the former Dimtsi Woyane Tigray Radio and Television Service under the new name Maedot Broadcasting Service, following a request submitted by the Tigray Regional State Interim Administration.
The authority announced that it had reviewed the request in accordance with the country’s media proclamation and found it appropriate to grant the licence under the new name.
The authority recalled that the former broadcaster’s licence had been revoked after monitoring and regulatory oversight found that the station had disseminated content in violation of the media proclamation.
It also cited the role the broadcaster had played during the conflict, describing it as having served as a weapon of war.
According to the authority, the Tigray Interim Administration subsequently requested that the station be licensed under the new name, Maedot Broadcasting Service, with the stated aim of contributing positively to peace and stability in the region and serving as a voice for the public.
After examining the application against the requirements of the media proclamation, the authority accepted the request and issued the new broadcasting licence.
The authority announced the decision and called on relevant stakeholders to extend the necessary cooperation to the newly licensed broadcasting service.
