Private sector investment key to unlocking Ethiopia’s tourism potential – Deputy PM
Addis Ababa, May 4, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh has underscored the pivotal role of private sector investment in unlocking the country’s tourism potential through expanded development in destinations and hospitality infrastructure.
Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh is on a working visit to Bahir Dar City, the capital of the Amhara Regional State, where he today launched the construction of the Four Points by Sheraton Bahir Dar hotel project.

In a social media post, Deputy PM Temesgen noted that Bahir Dar is “showing the way” in combining ancient heritage with modern progress, positioning itself as a model for tourism-led transformation.
He pointed to the historic Tana Hotel, describing it as a long-standing symbol of the city now entering a new phase of renewal and development.

According to his post, the project is being developed by MIDROC Investment Group and will be constructed at the site of the former Tana Hotel.
The Deputy Prime Minister indicated that the development, expected to be completed within 18 months, will enhance Bahir Dar’s tourism profile, deliver premium hospitality services, and stand as a new landmark for the lakeside city.

He further emphasized the convergence of history and modernity in Bahir Dar, describing the city as a unique destination where heritage and hospitality meet along the shores of Lake Tana.
