UN Chief Calls for Greater Dialogue to Advance Peace on International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations

Addis Ababa, June 11, 2026 (FMC) — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for renewed global commitment to dialogue as a foundation for peace, urging nations and communities to embrace mutual understanding and cooperation in addressing today’s pressing challenges.

In a message marking the International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations, observed on Wednesday, the UN chief said dialogue remains the world’s “best and only hope for peace,” pointing to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, Ukraine, Sudan and elsewhere as reminders of the urgent need for diplomatic engagement.

“When we listen, talk and connect, we replace confrontation with cooperation, and tension with trust,” Guterres said, stressing that meaningful dialogue can help resolve conflicts, address global challenges and improve people’s lives.

The Secretary-General further emphasized that “change begins with open minds and open hearts,” urging the international community to strengthen dialogue among civilizations as a pathway to lasting peace, mutual respect and solidarity.

Guterres also underscored that there is “no alternative” to dialogue and called for urgent action to advance peaceful solutions to conflicts around the world.

The International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations promotes mutual respect, intercultural understanding and peaceful coexistence among peoples, while encouraging dialogue as a key instrument for preventing conflict and fostering sustainable peace.
